Everything you need to know about the world's fighting aircraft since WWII. More than 2000 colour photos and illustrations. Modern Military Aircraft is a comprehensive guide to the world's fighting aircraft since World War II, from the earliest jet fighters and basic piston-engined bombers, to today's high-tech and stealthy superfighters. Aircraft featured include: the F-86 Sabre, which fought its way to convincing victory over Russiaís MiG-15 in the world's first jet-versus-jet battles in Korea; the Grumman F-14 Tomcat, the deadliest fleet fighter ever built, which has played an important part in the conflicts of the late 20th and early 21st centuries; Russia's export miracles, the Sukhoi Su-27 and MiG-29, currently in service with air arms across the world in an array of variants and the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II, destined to enter service with many air forces in the coming decades, combining supersonic performance with vertical take-off and landing capability. This book contains detailed features on more than 220 combat aircraft and helicopters from the past sixty-five years. Each aircraft is covered in detail, with feature boxes outlining its development, technical specifications, performance data and variants. Unique graphics allow the reader to compare specific features like firepower, troop-carrying capacity, and bombload to those of other aircraft of the same type.

Very visual book, Lots and lots of color photos and big color plates, some nice charts that compare some aircraft to each other. A great companion of the book 'Military Aircraft of the Cold War' from the same series.

Great great great book, with in-depth comparisons, detailed varients all presented in a neat and organised style with great illustrations, any modern military aviation enthusiast's must have

For a book published in 2010, it is rather behind the times in some of the text and photographs - no operational images of Eurofighter Typhoon (which is just referred to as EF-2000). There are also some strange omissions - TU-160, F-22 and F-117, whilst 8 pages are devoted to each of F4, and Mig-21? This said, it makes a good introductory book for those building an interest in military aircraft.

A well done layout page by page for the aircraft but the aircraft included obsolete, not modern aircraft and none of the latest Chinese military aircraft, such as the J20 and J31, which are of high interest and which details abound on the Internet. It is of minimal use and interest concerning "modern active aircraft". I was disappointed.

Modern military aircraft is an excellent read.Divided by manufacturer the book covers most of the modern fighter and bomber aircraft in service in the world today. Each double page covers one aircraft with pictures illustrations and interesting comparison stats with similar aircraft types. It is a good book to dip into to check facts and the illustrations are clear and well presented.

  • By Francisco J. Orellana Smit on 14 February 2011

Most of the aircraft articles are taken from books I've seen before. It doesn't look up to date at all, with lots of present-day aircraft missing and many which cannot be considered 'modern' at all. A bit disappointing. Some nice photos and pictures, though.

Not as up to date as it implies but a great summary of a wide variety of aircraft and their abilities in the style of the great old Salamander Military books

Good book with well laid out facts and pictures
