We are thirteen indigenous grandmothers. . . . We are deeply concerned with the unprecedented destruction of our Mother Earth, the atrocities of war, the global scourge of poverty, the prevailing culture of materialism, the epidemics that threaten the health of the Earth's peoples, and with the destruction of indigenous ways of life.
We, the International Council of Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers, believe that our ancestral ways of prayer, peacemaking, and healing are vitally needed today. . . . We believe that the teachings of our ancestors will light our way through an uncertain future.

In some Native American societies, tribal leaders consulted a council of grandmothers before making any major decisions that would affect the whole community. What if we consulted our wise women elders about the problems facing our global community today? This book presents the insights and guidance of thirteen indigenous grandmothers from five continents, many of whom are living legends among their own peoples. The Grandmothers offer wisdom on such timely issues as nurturing our families; cultivating physical and mental health; and confronting violence, war, and poverty. Also included are the reflections of Western women elders, including Alice Walker, Gloria Steinem, Helena Norberg-Hodge, and Carol Moseley Brown.

I did like this book, but I thought it would be covering a range of subjects and area's to advise a young city dwelling women of old wisdom in the management of her feckless and sinful life. Not so. The book's main aim is environmental awareness.I did her some whispers from the grandmothers, women to women, but I thought there could have been more of this... and less of an environmental agenda, which is frankly boring now.

I have wanted to read this book for ages and was delighted to receive it for Christmas. The wait was worth it, it is a inspiring book and any woman who cares about our world and ourselves will enjoy it.

This book serves to remind us all that our elders carry the wisdom of each community, particularly those who are gifted with healing capabilities, and the ability to see clearly where we are heading at this time. In this book the Grandmothers are the wise women from the 4 directions of our world, and they are each introduced to us with their vision. It is their combined view that prayers for the healing of our Mother Earth and its peoples, together with appropriate remedial action are urgently needed at this time. Their sincerity is clear and I can, indeed must, recommend this book to anyone involved in making a change on our planet at this time. This book is a call to all women to take up their power. May these fine Grandmothers be blessed for their efforts and supported in every way.

This book offers precious ancient wisdom - wisdom we have lost in the name of 'development'and 'success'. In the christian era we have exploited nature and all the indigenous cultures in the world, and with that lost our human values and divine wisdom. In this book the 13 Grandmothers offer insights in these ancient fundamental values.

I love this book. It brings together the thoughts expressed at the meeting of 13 grandmothers from all over the world. Each of them is a wise woman in her own right, and from various indigenous traditions. They all counsel change in our attitudes, if people are going to continue to have a planet to live on. We must look after the earth, if we are to look after ourselves. I found each page inspiring., and feel gratitude to the editor for bringing this wisdom to a wider audience via the book.

I disagree with one reviewer that this book is preachy. What is laid out in this book is hard truth and needs to be heard. The writings are full of wisdom, hope, truth and a passion for the Earth and humanity. Some bits are upsetting, such as the chapter on oppression and the unbelievable cruelty perpetrated by humans on others. Mostly it's a book of hope and inspiration and we could do well to heed the advice and fast.
